  1. The Watts Towers are three towers over 90 feet tall. They are located in Los Angeles. They will be repaired & preserved by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA.) The Towers were built by the artist, Simon Rodia. They were once almost destroyed by the city and then later made a "nation landmark." They were damaged in an earthquake and then a windstorm. The museum will work with other groups to repair and make a plan for the Towers future. This article made me want to see the Towers. At a distance, they look ugly. Up close, they beautiful. I hope to see it up close one day.

  2. Liu Bolin is the Chinese artist known as "The Invisible Man". He uses visual art to camouflage himself in photographs in modern day places. This thirty five year old man from Shandong, China obviously pays close attention to detail when producing his artwork, though some people say that he is a sham, and uses photoshop it actually can take up to ten hours to make his final product with the help of his two assistants. He tries to express his place in society by stating that he feels "invisible" because his artwork is not appreciated.

Visual arts is about being creative. Like Henri Mattise. He was a very creative artist. He did it his whole life. His dad didn't want him to be an artist. Henri didn't listen so he chose to be an artist. He loved it. Visual arts is also about imagining the world. He did a lot of sculptures, paintings, and drawings.

    Summary of Article

In the Los Angeles Times article named "Get ready for Art Weekend LA", by Jessica Gelt, on the fourth weekend in the new year(2011), there will be a gallery scene for anyone to see. This gallery scene is free for everyone, but you might want to buy one of the paintings. There will be a shuttle service to take you through the gallery. Also, Art Weekend LA organized by gallery owner, Edgar Varela, and former executive director of the Art Walk, Jay Lopez, has more to offer than the art walk, because the galleries will stay open the whole time. Over time, they want to expand this event to Venice, Culver City, and Santa Monica. Varela and Lopez hope around 1200 people will visit Art Weekend LA, for the love of art.

The Olmec civilization started around 1,400 B.C. Olmec architectures built the first monuments in Mexico. Each sculpture weighed about 7 to 10 tons each. Olmec people used chert, water, and sand to build these huge monuments. The Olmec must have been great builders.

The art review about Kelly Barrie at LAXART was featured in the LA Times. This interesting article is about an artist that was inspired by his childhood experience of running and playing on the playgrounds of London. To represent a plastic tube that you find at any playground, Kelly Barrie used a cement drain pipe with graffiti covering it. Kelly Barrie also used his feet and hands to make finger paintings to make it seem as if children had been playing on it. Another inspiration came from the rope ladders that are found on playgrounds that look like they belong on pirate ships. Kelly Barrie took pictures of these items, blew them up, and hung them on the wall. Kelly Barrie added discoloring to make it look ghostly. The pictures look so real and life size. These magnificent works of art remind Kelly Barrie of his childhood and of the playgrounds he used to enjoy as a kid.

Starting on the 4th weekend of January 2011, founders Edgar Varela, Jay Lopez, and Bert Green, will open Art Weekend L.A. in addition to Downtown Art Walk, which has been going on for six years. Art Weekend L.A. is an all day event on weekends for visitors to observe the fine art in galleries. While Downtown Art Walk’s population grew, the exhibits and galleries started to open later, because of the amount of people who came later in the day. Art Weekend L.A. aims to repeat this situation by offering shuttle services, which will stop five times along a route that consists of sixteen galleries, within walking distances of parking lots. Pop-up galleries and temporary exhibits won’t be included along the routes. People can leisurely enjoy the art in the galleries by taking one of the four shuttles that will be driving on the routes from noon to 6:00 pm. Along the route, they are planning to have an information booth to educate people about exhibits, galleries, and schedules, to help plan for the peoples’ day. Eventually, they want to expand the event to different cites, but for now they just want to attract people to come to the event. Hopefully, Art Weekend L.A. will turn out successful, just like Downtown Art Walk.

Michael Angelo’s famous painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The painting took about four years to complete from the year 1508 to the year of 1512. People rumor that he had neck problems after making the painting on the wall. He was selected to make this original masterpiece by Pope Julius the third. The picture consists of naked men holding hands, and clothed people sitting on chairs.

This review is about Daniel Lehan. Lehan is one of the three rishing artist in the romantic relam. he trys to to find himself in art. Lehan is trying to draw a bathetic, but perversely difficult, attempt to bring a fantasy of wilderness. He must have got his inspration from the movie taken. it was from the 1960 children tv sheris " the siging riging tree" . another artist that is a rissing star is Nicholas Symesa . her art works takes a proccesses and distortion. her artwork takes a more personal form. symesa made an artwork that had the natural effect of weaterness.

The 10 most famous works of art are: 10 "the lake" by Georgia O'Keefe, 9 "the persistence of memory" by Salvador Dali, 8 "the dream" by Pablo Picasso, 7 "corner of the garden at Montgeron" by Claude Monet, 6 "cafe terrace at night" by Vincent Van Gogh, 5 "girl with a pearl earring" by Jan Vemeer, 4 "luncheon of the boating party" by Pierre Auguste, 3 "the kiss" by Gustav Klimt, 2 "starry night" by Vincent Van Gogh, and finally the most famous painting of all time is 1 "mona lisa" by Leonardo Da Vinci. All these paintings are kept in museums and many people come every day just to see them in person. My favorite painting is the "starry night" by Vincent Van Gogh.

The 7th Annual Thousand Oaks Art Festival will take place on September 11 and 12th 2011 at Thousand Oaks Civic Art Center and at the Lakes. The festival will showcase more than 60 visual art exhibitors and allow children the opportunity to experience hands on / interactive art exhibits. This is a great event for the whole family. This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This festival is two days long with live performances on going. For adults only, there is wine tasting at the Lakes. You don't have to eat at a snack bar or have a greasy old cheeseburger, because there are gourmet food trucks all around the festival. Better hurry and book hotel rooms for over night stays because people are already booking them.

Picasso’s father was an art teacher so he helped him out a lot when it came to art. At age 14 Picasso passed the entrance exam to the Barcelona School of Fine Arts in just one day. When he was older he moved to Paris and he met some friends they were Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and George Braque. There was an era in the art world called the Cubism which is just like a collage. Nobody’s style was as good as Picasso’s. Picasso died at the 91. Which is a really long life, during his life he had made a lot of famous paintings.

For my Visual Arts in the news assignment, I decide to pick the Rose Parade float of the skim boarding dogs. I love dogs and I also skim board, so when I saw them in the news I thought they were fantastic and entertaining. The float and all the work that was put into making it was amazing, and beautiful, and made many people happy. The float turned out to be the heaviest float and set a Guinness World Book record. There was also a new addition since last year. There was a Jack Russell Terrier called Porter that was so cool. He even had to try out to be one of the dogs on the float. I have a Jack Russell Terrier and his name is Ebi.

The Pasadena Playhouse produces musical "Twist" by Debbie Allen

The Pasadena Playhouse was working on a full time season. They made a different version of the musical, "Oliver Twist". It is said to open June 25, 2011. Twist was tested in the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. The musical is the same as Charles Dickens musical about a boy in New Orleans and gets with a gang of bad kids before the Great Depression. The musical was first around since the 1990's but was changed for the Atlanta production. A reviewer from the Atlanta Journal constitution loved their play. They raised 2 million dollars from bankruptcy and opened a new stage.

On September 19 of 2000 It was reported that Poland's only art work done by Monet,Monet's Beach at Pourville, 1882, had been stolen from the National Museum of Poznan. The thief (later identified as Robert Zwolinski) cut the piece from the frame with a knife and replaced the real painting with a fake duplicate. Then the thief placed the real painting in his briefcase and left the museum. The robbery took 10 years to solve. In January of last year (2010) they matched the fingerprints to Robert Zwolinski. Robert was arrested and put in jail for three years for theft. Now the painting is back on public view at the museum and heavily guarded.

Project Compassion is a “not for profit” organization which honors military men and women who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Kaziah Hancock, a painter, a goat rancher, and a patriot founded Project Compassion after September 11, 2001 by painting portraits of these fallen heroes and giving them to their families. Kaziah, who has led a very interesting life, has been honored by the U.S. Military and the U.S. Government for humanitarian service. Some of the related videos could make you sad .

Famous artist and movie director, Tim Burton works as a great artist of his time, proving cartoons and quickly drawn sketches can appear to be more than they seem. Burton’s pieces of art will now be exhibited in Los Angeles, moving from MoMA an art museum in New York. Concept designs for movies like “ Beetlejuice”, “ Batman”, and “ Edward Scissorhands” will be shown, along with a various selection of other random sketches and original pieces. In May his exhibit moves to LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Visual arts is very creative and sometimes it is mystery.Ian Austin had published an Article about the Mona Lisa. It shows that there are a 3D and xray camera that can be thru paint. The camera shows that the artwork was made first with light colors and dark colors over it.The artwork was drawn with extrme thin layers of paint. They say that artwork was vandlized old and dirty. The painting of the Mona Lisa is a very fragile painting .The most dark areas is the mouth and the eyes. They are trying to figure out how the painting was done.

There has been a certain block in Torrance that has attracted endless lines of cars. It's called "Candy Cane Lane". The "Candy Cane Lane" is a block in Torrance that houses show off all their lights and decorations. This has been going on for years and years and has now turned into a family tradition. Every year, families go all out in decorations including Ferris wheels, trains, cartoon characters, and much more. I've actually witnessed this experience in person. One time when I went, I saw a house that had it's own radio station and it's lights would change colors whenever the beat would change.

Experts who have studied the Mona Lisa have recently found that she has codes found in her eyes. They are not sure on what exactly they mean but the LV that was found suggests that it stands for Leonardo da Vinci. Many other people do not think that it is writing at all. Some think that the "writing" is just scratches, considering the age. Whether it is writing or not is still a mystery.

    Reporting from Jerusalem —
Most people skip the little art gallery at Israel's Holocaust museum Yad Vashem because they think it will be too depressing. After an emotionally draining tour through a maze of testimonies and artifacts, few have the stamina to look at so-called Holocaust Art, which seems to promise only more dark images of death and destruction: skeletal shapes emerging from smokestacks, hollowed eyes looking through barbed wire, piles of emaciated corpses. So it's a surprise that Yad Vashem's little-known art museum is actually a respite, offering an unexpected glimpse into how a group of persecuted artists, facing one of the 20th century's ugliest chapters, managed to secretly produce a body of work that was often quiet, understated and beautiful.

Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa during the Renaissance in Florence Italy. The painting wasn’t recognized till the late 1900s. Once it gained fame it was stolen in 1911. It was soon returned and protected in bullet proof glass. In December 2010 it was claimed that the Mona Lisa appears to have small letters and numbers in her eyes which are only visible when viewed with a magnifying glass. The discovery was described by the “Daily Mail.” The painting is worth $700 dollars, and is one of the most famous paintings of all time.

My article is titled "Time and Vandals take toll on Portland's murals". The story tells about the African-American public art in the city of Portland, Oregon. Many of these murals are being ruined by erosion and vandalism. It tells about a booklet called "Walls of Pride" which will be coming out soon.
The booklet will have histories and maps to see the various murals and art pieces throughout the city.

The Art Institute of Chicago has some shocking news. After May 26, 2011, its Target Free Thursday Evenings—which let us visit the museum for free on Thursdays from 5–8pm—will be no more.

This is a catastrophe. A visit to the Art Institute is well worth the $18 general admission, but if the museum almost eliminates its free hours, it’s turning its back on low-income visitors. (As of June 1, admission will be free on the first and second Wednesdays of every month.)

The Art Institute is offering free admission every weekday through February 4, 2011. Unfortunately, this perk replaces the museum’s Free February program—and the museum’s convenient extended Friday hours end February 25

    http://www.theartnewspaper.com/articles/Benin-mask-expected-to-break-auction-record/22150

This Ivory Pendant mask broke an auction record. The mask was very old and only weigh about 4 pounds. The mask was an African work of art, it was made in the 1500's so that is basically what made it so valuable. Also, because it was a queens mask. The mask was sold in London on February 17. The auction item did not just come with the mask, it also came with five other Benin antiquities from the Galway descendants, including an important carved tusk, three ivory and bronze armlets and a tusk stand. I found that pretty interesting.

At the USC Fisher Museum of Art there is a n exhibition called Explorations and Revelations.
Admission is free and its for all ages. Sylvia Shap is the artist. Her art work has a unique style .
I like the way her art looks because its very interesting and different from most artwork I have seen.
Her art reveals the subject's inner being. The backgrounds in her paintings are chosen to show personality.
There are 50 portraits that show the artist's stylistic evolution.
There is also drawings, oil paintings, and mix media works.

People who love art must be going to downtown L.A. for a gallery walk. In 2004 about 20,000 people started to go to this annual art event. All the people agreed that instead of going for the party, they were really going for the beautiful art. I picked this because i love art and i thought you might like this story.

I have read about how graffiti is changing young artists. So I read an art blog by Carolina A. Miranda; anyways she wrote about this picture which was done by 35 year old which depicts mazes. It depicts out of the old gray wall to a new pop picture which brings out the emotion of the picture.

  50. More amazing sidewalk art by Julian Beever

Julian Beever draws his pavement pictures with chalk and the drawings are gone after a short time. They are either washed away by rain or disappear from the wear of foot traffic.
Although his chalk sidewalk drawings are short lived, they are permanently preserved in photographs.

Julian Beaver is bringing his latest 3D pavement drawings to the streets of New Orleans. This renowned British street artist has been making pavement drawings for 10 years and has worked in the U.K., Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Germany, the USA and Australia. Thanks to a grant from New Orleans' Downtown Development District with and the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Beever was able to make a pavement drawing reflecting New Orleans' city life. The theme for his drawing, which he calls "anamorphic illusions drawn in a special distortion in order to create an impression of 3 dimensions when seen from one particular viewpoint" was " Louis Armstrong if I can get a likeness...If I can't, then it's just any musician!" Looks pretty Armstrong-like to me. But the drawing isn't just in New Orleans or on the street. Beever sees the big picture (no pun intended):
It doesn't worry me at all that this drawing will disappear after a couple of days in the rain, because the final product is the photograph... It's that photograph that goes on the Internet. Then thousands of people will see it. It will be there forever. It doesn't vanish, really. The drawing on the ground is just a vehicle.

For my art news I picked graffiti art. I picked graffiti art because I thought that it was cool to see art other than Gangs, or gang signs on the wall. Graffiti art is the most colorful box art. The art was created in 2008, but was just recently discovered by the U.S. I enjoy the graffiti art and I hope that you did to.

Efsun Gunes is an artist who has worked as a commercial art director for 10 years.
She works for major brands, such as Target or Best buy. But her favorite thing to
paint is cats. Cats are her favorite thing in the whole world. She had cats as a child,
teenager, and still has many cats today. She paints them because all through out
her childhood she lived with them, and her family had very funny and humourous
stories about cats. Her first art series was called the "Cattoman Empire", which
    contained only cats.

For my art news assignment I chose 3D sidewalk chalk art. I've seen some amazing sidewalk chalk art, but the sidewalk chalk art I saw by Tom Kelly was incredible! It looked extremely scary, but awesome at the same time. What made it most interesting was how it looked so real. Tom Kelly did a great job on the details because from a distance it actually makes you think "Is this real?" or "I better be careful."

My museum is called Western Museum of flight. I like it because it teaches us about our air force and other planes. And they have a really cool gift shop. The gift shop has T-shirts, mugs, toy planes, tiny sacs, book marks, a N.A.S.A. poster, metal boxes, key chains, and hats. Some of the planes were built near El Segundo. I think you should see the Western Museum of flight.

Paul Soldner, ceramic artist who discovered American Raku and taught at Scripps college for many years died at his home in Claremont at the age of 89. Raku was long used for tea ceremony wares in Japan is made by firing the pot in the kiln at low temperature and then it is dropped in water. American Raku involves smoking the piece instead, by plunging it into combustible materials such as as sawdust or newspapers. Soldner discovered this technique while preparing for a demonstration at a local crafts fair

The National Gallery ia a Art gallery in the middle of London. It holds 2300 paintings from 1250 to 1900.The National Gallery got two thirds of the art by privite donations. Even though it is a small compairson with other big collections it is known for covering a broad historical scope. this made it easy to trace big develoments from thne Early Renaissance to the Post-impressionist.

Lisa Moren is an artist in New York who is having a new exhibit. One of her artworks that will be showing is called Marbleized Paper from the Gulf. She is using waste material such as oil from an oil spill in the Deep Water Horizon ridge to create her artwork. Also, there is another artwork that will be showing such as Chesapeake Bay Water Watercolors. That artwork is made from Baltimore waterways.

    Eli Broad, today's Norton Simon
    --------------------

Los Angeles' two preeminent art collectors developed a generation apart but in surprisingly similar ways.

By Christopher Knight, Los Angeles Times Art Critic

    January 16 2011

Usually, Eli Broad's trajectory as an art collector is traced to mentoring by the late Taft Schreiber. Broad himself has talked admiringly of what he learned about art from the MCA Inc. executive (and Ronald Reagan's former Hollywood agent), whose small but extraordinary trove of works by Jackson Pollock, Piet Mondrian, Alberto Giacometti and 10 others was a magnanimous 1989 gift to the Museum of Contemporary Art from the estate of Schreiber's widow, Rita.

The artist's ever-ready devices are instant drawing pads, always by his side.

By Barbara Isenberg, Special to the Los Angeles Times

    January 23 2011

Reporting from Bridlington, England — -- David Hockney may be pretty isolated here in Yorkshire, some four hours by train from London, but that's the way he likes it. Ensconced near the quiet rural landscape he's immortalized in paintings and watercolors, he has more time not only to draw but to experiment with new ways of making art.
